Seniors gather supplies, money for troops

Look for Homefront Journal -- a collection of information, local events and Marylanders' efforts around the Persian Gulf war -- daily in the Today section.

This is not their first war, and only time will tell if it's their last. But in the meantime, the members of the Pikesville Senior Center are doing their part.

The senior citizens have been collecting supplies and money for, respectively, the troops in the Gulf and the family they've left behind. And the center is asking others to contribute as well. Said director Gail Rubenstein, "We hope to be the drop-off point for the Pikesville community."

The center, which offers classes and outreach programs for senior citizens, has collected about 70 pounds of candy, personal care items, socks, cassette tapes and other supplies that it plans to send to Maryland units in Saudi Arabia. About $300 has been collected to go to families of soldiers around the state.

"People have been so generous," said Ms. Rubenstein. "It's been wonderful to see people giving $5 here, $5 there."

The center has received most of its donations from its members and their friends and acquaintances. It also is working with the Pikesville Community Growth Corporation to reach other residents and businesses in the area.

If you want to contribute, make checks out to the Pikesville Senior Center Council, designating them for the Desert Storm Operation, and send to: 1301 Reisterstown Road, Pikesville, Md. 21208. Supplies for the troops can be dropped off weekdays between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 887-1245.

Ms. Rubenstein suggested donations of snacks, health and hygiene products and writing material -- one particularly creative donation has been birthday and anniversary cards that soldiers can send back home. Also, she added, don't forget there are women serving in the gulf.
