Mervo wrestling's reversal raises championship hopes

Mervo's basketball team has grabbed a lot of attention this winter, overshadowing the rejuvenation of the wrestling team, which is off to its best start (6-1) since it won back-to-back titles in 1985 and 1986.

The wrestlers have been led by junior Bobby Giles (171), who lost his first match and has won 12 straight, including two tournament titles; junior Troy Graves (135), who is 13-1; and senior Jeff Young (145), who is 9-2 with one tournament title.

Mervo will wrestle Dunbar tomorrow. Also tomorrow, Southwestern will meet St. Mary's in a battle between the Maryland Scholastic Association B Conferences' only unbeaten teams.

Mervo's final regular-season match is against St. Mary's, the defending conference champion. Mervo's loss was to Southwestern.

Friday's boys basketball game between No. 1 Dunbar and No. 3 Lake Clifton has been moved to Morgan State at 8 p.m. Tickets in advance for Lake Clifton or Dunbar students are $1. Tickets in advance for all others are $2. Tickets at the door will cost $3.

Oral commitments continue to roll in as the National Collegiate Athletic Association football signing date draws near. The signing period will begin tomorrow and end April 1.

Three linemen from The Sun's All-Metro team last fall have committed. Gilman's John Tyler (6-5, 250) is headed for North Carolina; Forest Park's Joshua Austin (6-3, 280) will attend Wake Forest; and City's Ernest Rhoney (6-3, 290) has decided on Minnesota.

Also Glenelg wide receiver Juan Dorsey, another All-Metro pick, has selected James Madison.

St. Mary's All-Metro forward Laura Coakley, who re-injured her right knee in practice Jan. 28, will not play again this season, Saints coach Carmine Blades said.

Blades said Coakley, who has signed with Wake Forest, will require arthroscopic surgery to repair torn cartilage.

Woodlawn's 67-47 loss to Parkville in girls basketball Friday ended the Warriors' 27-game winning streak in the Baltimore County 3A-4A League.

Woodlawn had not lost a league game since since January 1990, also to Parkville.
