Woman charged with hostage hoax

Baltimore County police today arrested a 28-year-old woma on charges she falsely reported that her husband kept her hostage in their home for nearly 12 hours over the weekend while threatening her with a machine gun.

Gail Frances Wright, of the 5900 block of Schering Road in the White Marsh area, was arrested about 9:30 a.m. at her home and charged with filing a false report.

Police spokesman E. Jay Miller said Wright dialed 911 at 1:35 p.m. Saturday and said her husband had broken into their home and was armed.

"She told the 911 operator he had a machine gun and he had

blown out basement windows," Miller said. "If anyone came in, he would kill her."

At 2 p.m., a group of about 30 police personnel, including 10 tactical officers and six hostage negotiators, arrived and took up posts at the front and back of the house, Miller said.

About 3:30 p.m., Miller said, Wright ran from the house, got into her car and drove to the end of the street where the police command post was.

"We didn't stop her. We wanted to make sure she was clear of him," Miller said.

There, she told police, "He's in the house with a rifle in his lap," Miller said.

At 12:45 a.m. yesterday, police entered and "searched the house from top to bottom for 35 minutes," Miller said. "There was no husband. Nor were there any weapons there."

Wright told police she had been married since September and she and her husband had an argument about 9 a.m. Saturday, a day after police had ordered him to leave the house.

On Saturday afternoon, she went to Essex District Court and filed an arrest warrant charging her husband, Larry Edward Wright, 42, with several offenses, including burglary, destruction property, false imprisonment and assault, police said. She admitted later it was a hoax.

"She sat there brooding about it and thinking about it," Miller said. "She just decided she wanted to make trouble for him.

"This is a very bizarre thing. The whole community was disturbed."
