The YWCA of Anne Arundel County is sponsoring the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest. Students in grades three through six are invited to participate in the contest.

The theme of the essay is: "What can you do to contribute to Martin Luther King Jr.'s goal of peace?"

The number of words suggested for the essay are: third and fourth grade, 25 to 50; fifth and sixth grades, 50 to 100.

The criteria for assessment include originality, concision and continuity.

The contest deadline is Feb. 4. Mail essays to the YWCA, 17 Cypress Creek Road, Severna Park, Md. 21146.

Winners will be notified Feb. 15. An awards presentation, followed by refreshments, will be at 4 p.m. Feb. 22 at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park. Winner will be asked to read their essays.

Prizes include a first-place trophy for one winner in each grade and runner-up ribbons for two winners in each grade.

The instructions for the essay are to write your name, school, grade, address and phone number on the back of the paper. Write the essay on one side of the paper.

Give the essay a title. Think about what is being asked in the theme. Write the essay and read it carefully to be sure you have said what you want to say. Make any changes that are needed and rewrite the essay. Be sure the theme is followed.
