A Severn man was crushed to death Jan. 31 when he fell from an earth-moving machine that rolled down a hill and landed on him.
Nicholas Matthew Fillmann III, 29, of the 7700 block of Telegraph Road, was working at the Sudley Road landfill on Nutwell Sudley Road in Deale when the accident occurred. Police said he was operating a CaterpillarPan, a heavy earth-moving machine.
Police say Fillmann was driving on a steep hill when the back section of the machine started to slide, pulling the cab with it. Fillmann was thrown from the cab into the ditch. The machine rolled over three times before landing on top of him.
DEER STALKERS CHARGED WITH TRESPASSING
Three men were arrested on trespassing charges Jan. 29 after police say they were preparing to illegally hunt deer on federally protected land that is part of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Area.
A police report says an officer on patrol saw a 1978 Mercury Cougar parked on the property of John Calhoun, on the Ivy Neck Farm in Lothian.
Police said the car, with three men inside, wasparked next to a field in which seven deer stood 50 yards away. Several other deer were seen standing about 100 yards away, police said.
Police say they found open beer cans and two loaded rifles in the car.
Charged with trespassing, having an open container of alcoholand possession of a loaded weapon in violation of the state Natural Resources Act were Donald James Meyers, 37, of the unit block of Oak Lane Road in Mayo; Anthony Francis Maio, of the 200 block of MarylandAvenue in Annapolis; and Harry Franklin Snots, 21, of the 3800 blockof Twin Oaks Road in Edgewater.
SPALDING STUDENT ACCUSED OF POSSESSION
Drug charges are pending against a 16-year-old boy who was found with marijuana in Spalding Catholic High School in Severn, policesay.
Police say that Father Paul Martin, dean of students, received information that several students may have brought drugs or alcohol into the school.
During a random locker search Thursday, police say Martin found a small matchbox inside the jacket pocket of one student.
The student told police he obtained the marijuana while he was in Ocean City in August and that he didn't use it, but kept it "tobe cool."
