$3.5 million expansion under way at Hopkins lab

The main entrance of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory near Columbia is undergoing a $3.5 million renovation and expansion.

The work will add about 15,300 square feet to the front of the building that contains the laboratory's main entrance and lobby, conference, administrative and dining areas.

The expanded front entrance and reception areas will feature double entry doors as part of a new one-story reflective tinted glass and curtain-type wall. Another entry way, for access to conference areas, will be added west of the main entrance.

An existing small conference area will be integrated into the enlarged reception area and lobby. A new dining facility, with twice the seating capacity as the old facility, will be located in the southern extension of the building. The executive conference room will also be enlarged and additional administrative offices added.

The work is expected to be completed by the end of 1991. Whiting-Turner Contracting Co. is the builder and Gaudreau Inc. of Baltimore is the architect.

Nordstrom will begin work on its store in the Towson Town Center this spring. The store is planned to open in August 1992.

The 225,000-square-foot store will have four levels of retail.

Meanwhile, construction of the mall expansion continues on schedule for its October 1991 opening and is more than 50 percent complete. Framing for the three domes that will highlight the mall courts has been completed and installation of the glass has begun.
