Gov. William Donald Schaefer recently announced the State Board of Public Works approval of a $140,000 contract to develop the Carroll County Sports Complex near Union Mills.

"Besides becoming a more pleasant place for citizens in the area, the sports complex will be an improved site for regular and national softball tournaments," said Schaefer in a prepared statement. "And Program Open Space money will payfor more than one-third of the total costs."

This $415,000 project, which represents the last of three stages,includes the design and construction of lighting for three softball fields, construction of two picnic pavilions with concrete floors andtwo playing areas for small children. The $140,000 grant comes from Carroll County's share of the state Program Open Space money allocated to local governments in accordance with state law.
