LIFE OF LOVE CONTINUING INTO ITS 101ST YEAR

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Ask Myrtle Serviss about her secret for living a long life and she'll tell you, "If you live right, God will take care of you."

By living right, she means, "You must love and be loved, that's most important."

There must be a lot of love in Serviss' life, because she turned 100 Dec. 21 and celebrated her birthday Thursday at the Chesapeake Manor Nursing Home in Arnold.

The nursing home featured an entertainment group that sang and danced to such classics as "Let Me Entertain You" and "Me and My Shadow."

Serviss' eyes sparkled as she sang along with her friends and listened to the lively beat of the piano, washboard and upright bass.

Growing up on her family's farm in Joplin, Mo., Serviss wasn't so carefree. She spent a lot of her time helping out with the farm chores.

"As a farmer's daughter I never ran around much," she said. "Instead, I listened to music."

Her most vivid memories of the 1920s are of when radio was introduced.

But radio tunes weren't the only kind of music she listened to:. Family members played a variety of musical instruments.
