Basketball tournaments slammed by bad weather

The two championship games in the girls Holly-N-Hoops Tournament at the University of Maryland Baltimore County were canceled yesterday because of the inclement weather, and several other basketball tournaments had games postponed or canceled.

Holly-N-Hoops co-chairwoman Kathy Campbell said Southern of Anne Arundel County was declared the winner by default over North Harford in the Holly championship game, and No. 5 Seton Keough won by default over No. 7 Severna Park in the Hoops championship contest.

Players from North Harford and Severna Park were unable to attend because they could not get a bus, Campbell said. However, the games will not be counted on the teams' won-lost records.

"We tried to reschedule the games [for today], but there was a conflict of who could play when," Campbell said.

Bus problems also caused postponement of three of the six first-round games of the boys Baltimore County Holiday Invitational at Essex Community College. The three games have been postponed until today because the three Harford County teams were not allowed to travel in anticipation of the poor road conditions.

In the Gold Division, the C. Milton Wright-Lansdowne game that was scheduled for last night at 6 is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. today. The Havre de Grace-Dundalk game in the Blue Division is rescheduled for today at 1:30, and the North Harford-Milford Mill contest in the White Division is at 5 p.m. today. The rest of today's schedule remains as it was scheduled. EVT and Bowie meet at 6:45 p.m., and Aberdeen and Perry Hall play at 8:30 p.m. in first-round games of the Red Division.

The schedule changes force tournament officials to plan eight games instead of six tomorrow. Three consolation games scheduled for yesterday have been moved to tomorrow. The first of four consolation games begins at 10:30 a.m. The first of four championship games starts at 4:30 p.m.

Only one of the four games in the Wes Unseld Tournament at Catonsville Community College was postponed yesterday. That semifinal matchup between No. 8 Woodlawn and No. 10 Broadneck will be played today at 3 p.m., followed by consolation games at 4:45, 6:15 and 8 p.m. Edmondson and Mount St. Joseph met in the other semifinal last night.

Because of the postponement, the tournament will be extended one day, with the championship game tomorrow at 5 p.m.

The championship game of the WFMD Holiday Invitational at Thomas Johnson, featuring No. 13 Oakland Mills vs. Thomas xTC Johnson, has been postponed until tonight at 8.

Other boys basketball tournaments were postponed at Chesapeake (Anne Arundel), North East (Cecil County), Meade, Liberty, Southern (Anne Arundel), Westminster, North Carroll, Gilman, Dulaney and Mount Carmel.
