Katharine Edwards Volunteer at cemetery

Katharine B. Edwards, who helped families as a volunteer at Arlington National Cemetery, died Dec. 3 at St. Joseph Hospital after suffering a heart attack at her Cockeysville home.

Mrs. Edwards, who was 94, had long been a resident of Arlington, Va., before joining her daughter in Cockeysville four years ago.

She was one of the original Arlington Ladies, a group that attends funerals at the cemetery either to assist the families or to stand in for those unable to attend.

She also did volunteer work at Air Force post chapels and in service organizations.

Her husband, retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Idwal H. Edwards, died in 1981.

The former Katharine Bierman was a native of Bloomsburg, Pa., and was a graduate of what is now Bloomsburg University and of the New Haven Normal School of Gymnastics in Connecticut.

She supervised gymnastics at schools in Richmond, Va., before her marriage in 1920.

Mrs. Edwards is survived by her daughter, Katharine Picek of Cockeysville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services for Mrs. Edwards were held Dec. 6 at the Fort Meyer Chapel adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery.
