Police, fire log

A man who lists his address as "the streets" was arrested on charges of robbing a Columbia home Sunday, and police say the man is being investigated in connection with about 15 recent burglaries in the area.

James Anthony Grove Jr., 29, is also charged with destruction of property and theft for the break-in, which occurred shortly before 12:20 p.m. in the 9400 block of Wandering Way.

Police credit an area resident who called to report the robbery. A police car was sent to the scene and two officers found the suspect inside a home that had been forcibly entered, police said.

The burglar gained entry to the house by prying open a patio door with a tire iron, police said. The tire iron was recovered in the residence on a kitchen table, a court charging record said.

Approximately $27 in Canadian money was found in Grove's pocket during his arrest, court records said. The money had been taken from the home, police said.

In a police interview following his arrest, Grove admitted to stealing the Canadian money and to breaking into the house, court records said.

In the last several months, about 15 residential burglaries have occurred on the east side of Columbia, police said. Each was similar to the burglary Sunday, and Grove is being questioned in connection with those cases, police said.

Two of three people critically injured Tuesday in a head-on collision of two cars in Clarksville remained hospitalized Friday as investigators continued to probe for the cause of the accident, county police said.

The accident occurred about 1:30 p.m. on Route 108, about 500 feet west of Trotter Road. One of the cars apparently crossed the center line, police said.

Courtney Motley, 18, of the 5400 block of Halflight Garth in Columbia and the driver of one of the cars, was listed Friday in fair and stable condition at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

The identity of the second driver was not available from police. The two occupants of the car, Malenie Davis, 26, of the 3700 block of Stone Road in Taneytown, and Kimberly Caldwell, 22, of the 1300 block of Pinch Valley Road, were also taken to Shock Trauma, police said.

Caldwell was released last Sunday evening. Davis was listed Friday in fair and stable condition.
