Loyola interviews Rutgers assistant COLLEGES

Joe Boylan, assistant athletic director at Rutgers University, is one of six finalists for the vacant Loyola College athletic director's job, said a source familiar with the selection process.

The source said yesterday that Boylan has been interviewed for the position and is scheduled to return for another interview in the next couple of days.

Boylan was traveling with the Rutgers basketball team yesterday and could not be reached for comment. Boylan does the radio XTC commentary for all Rutgers basketball games.

The Rutgers basketball team was in Amherst, Mass., last night for a game against the University of Massachusetts.

Four other finalists for the position are Bob Ferry, former Washington Bullets general manager; Chris Monasch, Northeast Conference commissioner; Bill Stein, St. Peter's athletic director; and Carolyn Schlie, senior associate athletic director at the University of Pennsylvania.

It is not clear who the other finalist is.

The source said: "There is no front-runner at the time. There are two committees doing the interviewing, but the final decision will be made by Father [Joseph A.] Sellinger [president of Loyola College]."

Thomas Scheye, academic vice president and provost at Loyola, heads two committees conducting the search. One is composed of faculty members and students, and the other of alumni and friends, including Pam Shriver, tennis star; Jim McKay, ABC-TV sportscaster; and Joe De Francis, owner of Pimlico and Laurel race courses.

Scheye, who was out of his office yesterday afternoon and could not be reached for comment, has said he hopes to have an athletic director by the end of January.
