Head coach: Tom Slichter (sixth season).

1989-1990 record: 5-7.

Top wrestlers: Seniors, Brian Eveleth (130), Alex Whittington (140) and Dave McWilliams (145); juniors, Richard Brown (112), Ron Shirk (152), Tony Perillo (160) and Shawn Somers (171); sophomore, Ron Alexander (119).

Coach's outlook: "We had 45 kids come out for the team, which is not as good as in the past. But this is probably the best group of all-around athletes that we've had come out for the team. (County champion) Brian Eveleth had surgery (torn rotator cuff) this past summer and he's progressing very well. I'm hoping that McWilliams and Whittington can each finish in the top four or five of their region. The rest of the team is young and they'll have to gain confidence early."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: Eveleth grabbed a 7-3 victory over Aberdeen's two-time state champion, Matt Slutzky, and was 25-0 before his injury last season. Whittington and McWilliams both are being pushed, thanks to the sheer numbers of wrestlers in practice, and each has hopes of improving on their records (12-11 and 8-10, respectively). The pair of them will need to come through every match if the Cougars expect to improve on their overall team record. Brown and Alexander were sometime starters toward the end of the season and will try to make the step up to the varsity on a full-time basis. Somers was a county tournament runner-up as a 130-pounder on the junior varsity squad, but he has jumped up to the varsity and to 171 pounds. Look for the Cougars to finish in the middle of the pack.
