Blast's Savage thinking of retiring after season

Blast defender Bruce Savage said yesterday he's thinking about retiring after this season.

"This could be my last year," said Savage, who turns 30 on Dec. 21. "I'm getting old and I've been playing a long time."

Savage is in his eighth season in the Major Soccer League and has appeared in five consecutive All-Star games. He pointed out that his family makes its offseason home in Florida and wants to live there year-round.

"It depends on a number of things," he said. "But one of them is that the longer I play, the more the chance I have of getting hurt. I enjoy doing outdoor things and I wouldn't want to have to give those things up."

Savage considers himself fortunate to be a veteran defender who has never sustained a serious knee injury. "Knock on wood," he said.
