John R. Friedel Coast Guard officer


Services for John R. Friedel, a retired chief warrant officer in the Coast Guard, will be held at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Barranco and Sons Funeral Home, Ritchie Highway and Robinson Road, Severna Park.

Mr. Friedel, who was 54 and lived in Arnold, died Monday at the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis after a heart attack.

He was in the Coast Guard from 1953 until 1983 when he retired as commanding officer of an ice breaking cutter, the Chinook, working out of Curtis Bay.

The Baltimore native was a graduate of the Kenwood High School.

He liked bay and surf fishing and was a member of the Sincerity Lodge of the Masons and the Baltimore Forest of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon.

Mr. Friedel is survived by his wife of 30 years, the former Elizabeth A. Zelechowski; two daughters, Jeaneen E. Mullenhard of Annapolis and Melissa A. Bussard of Windham, N.H.; his father and stepmother, William E. and Joan Friedel of Pasadena; a brother, Andrew K. Friedel of Rosedale; and two grandchildren.
