Warren Schafer


Warren Schafer, 77, a retired Army musician and meat stall owner, died Sunday at Howard County General Hospital after a heart attack.

Services were being held today at the Sterling-Ashton funeral establishment in Catonsville.

Mr. Schafer, who lived at the Heartlands retirement community in Ellicott City, retired in 1961 from the Army as a chief warrant officer. He had been a bandmaster or leader for 30 years.

The Baltimore native was a graduate of Catonsville Senior High School and studied at the Peabody Institute.

He played several instruments, including the flute, piccolo andclarinet, and led bands at Fort Meade in the late 1940s and the late 1950s.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, the former Mary Jane Owings; three sons, Clyde W. Schafer of Ellicott City, Robert F. Schafer of Baldwin and George H. Schafer of Annandale, Va.; a daughter, Suzanne I. LaFever of St. Louis, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
