MEDICAL CENTER EXPANSION APPROVED Phase II to be built on Jennifer Road

The Board of Trustees of Anne Arundel General Health Care Systems, the parent corporation of Anne Arundel Medical Center, recently approved plans for Phase II expansion of its Medical Park on Jennifer Road.

Partial construction of the $35 million to $45 million project, which will create a women's and children's center, a diagnostic and treatment facility, and a medical office building, could begin as early as 1991 with completion in 1995, pending approval of funds and permits.

The modern inpatient women's and children's center will provide comprehensive obstetric, gynecological and pediatric care offering labor and delivery rooms, single patient rooms, and sophisticated technology and treatment center will feature radiological, cardiac diagnostic and basic laboratory services.

The medical office building will provide office and exam space for local physicians.

"The Medical Park Phase II plans position Anne Arundel Medical Center to meet the future health care needs of our community," said Martin L. Doordan, president of Anne Arundel Medical Center.

"It also creates opportunities for more appropriate use of the overcrowded downtown facility. Relocating the inpatient services for women and children will provide space for expansion of medical/surgical, critical care and emergency services at the downtown campus."

A driving force behind the development of the Medical Park is the physical limitations of the hospital's Annapolis location.

The main campus is located on 6 acres. Because of building and zoning restrictions, there is no opportunity to increase capacity at the site. Expansion on Jennifer Road is viewed as an essential component of meeting future health care requirements.

The 52-acre site of the Medical Park is part of a 104-acre parcel purchased by Anne Arundel General Health Care Systems in 1984. The approved development plan was motivated by an assessment of future community health care needs.

That assessment was the basis for Phase I of the Medical Park that includes an outpatient surgery center, oncology treatment center and a health education center. Phase I was opened in Fall 1989.

Anne Arundel Medical Center is a 303-bed non-profit acute care facility that provides inpatient and outpatient hospital care to the citizens of Anne Arundel County and parts of neighboring counties.

Services are provided at its downtown Annapolis site and the Medical Park on Jennifer Road. The Medical Center provides primary, secondary and selected types of tertiary-level care.
