Mass of Christian burial for Virginia M. Fornaro, who had headed the Baltimore chapter of a group that works with military veterans, will be offered at 9 a.m. today at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, 4414 Frankford Ave.
Mrs. Fornaro, who was 88 and known as "Granny" by children and adults alike, died Sunday of complications to Alzheimer's disease at her home on Cedella Avenue.
After a son, Leonard Fornaro, was killed in World War II, she served as president of the Baltimore chapter of the Gold Star Mothers of Maryland.
The former Virginia M. Calderone was born in Pittsburgh. She came to Baltimore in 1927 with her husband, Nicholas Fornaro, a steel worker.
Mr. Fornaro died in 1962 after retiring from Bethlehem Steel Corp.
She is survived by two sons, Dominic N. Fornaro of Ellicott City and John G. Fornaro of Manchester; two daughters, Constance C. Eckes of Baltimore and Natalie V. Dice of Eldersburg; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
