Penguins' four-goal third leaves Caps reeling, 7-4

LANDOVER -- A four-goal third period boosted the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 7-4 victory over the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League opener for both last night.

Kevin Stevens' second goal of the game, at 12 minutes, 45 seconds of the third period, broke a 4-4 tie for the Penguins at the Capital Centre. Mark Recchi added a pair of goals for Pittsburgh, at 14:35 and with less than a minute to play.

Stevens also assisted on two goals.

The Capitals forged ties twice during the third period. Kelly Miller's backhand from the slot tied the score at 3 at 7:04. However, Joe Mullen, on a wraparound goal during a power play, gave Pittsburgh a 4-3 lead at 9:21.

Peter Zezel's first goal as a Capital, at 12:07, tied the score at 4.
