Dow plunges at opening

NEW YORK -- Stock prices plunged 60 points shortly after markets opened today, triggering the New York Stock Exchange's "uptick rule" that restricts computer-driven program selling, before rebounding.

At 10 a.m., the Dow Jones Industrial Average was still down about 41 points to the 2,475 level, and Standard & Poor's 500-stock index was down about 5 points. Big Board advancers trailed decliners by an 11-to-1 margin.
