More Sealift

THE BALTIMORE SUN

The House Armed Services Committee has moved smartly into the post-Cold War world by approving a $250 million add-on to the Pentagon's request for greater sealift capacity. It provides for the acquisition of three fast sealift ships to complement the eight aging ships now being used in the Persian Gulf operation.

Engine trouble with these ships, delays in chartering slower commercial ships and disillusion with the condition of old merchant vessels in the reserve fleet has awakened Washington to sealift shortcomings. If the Senate and the White House approve, the Pentagon budget will contain $625 million for six new sealift ships.

About time.
