Margaret Calvert Designer of hats


Services for Margaret Calvert, a designer of hats, will be held at 1 p.m. today at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Cathedral and Read streets.

Mrs. Calvert died Sunday at her home in the Ambassador Apartments. She was 90.

The former Margaret Kroder was born in Norfolk, Va., and moved to Baltimore with her family when she was young. During World War II, she served in the Women's Army Corps.

For years, Mrs. Calvert was well-known for her hats. She had a shop in New York where she designed, made and sold her creations.

She returned to Baltimore in the late 1950s and married Harry G. Calvert, who died in 1969.

She was a member of the English Speaking Union, the Women's Civic League, the Society of Virginia Women of Maryland and Emmanuel Church.

She is survived by a brother, Howard G. Kroder of Chestertown; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Edward F. Crowding of Palm Coast, Fla.; and a stepgrandson, John Calvert of Lutherville.
