After nine years at WMAR-TV, news director Gary Wordlaw is leaving to take over the news operation at WJLA-TV in Washington.

Mr. Wordlaw's last day at Channel 2 will be Oct. 23. No successor has yet been named, according to Arnold J. Kleiner, WMAR's president and general manager.

"We're going to miss him," Mr. Kleiner said, "but we're not in the habit of holding people back when they get an opportunity. And this is areal opportunity for Gary."

WJLA-TV, an ABC affiliate, is in the nation's seventh-largest television market, with 1.7 million households that have television sets. WMAR, Baltimore's NBC affiliate, is in the 22nd-largest marked with just under 1 million TV households. Mr. Wordlaw, 39, joined Channel 2 in 1981 as an assignment editor. He has since held the posts of operations manager and assistant news director. He was named news director in 1988.

The announcement of his departure was made yesterday afternoon.
