SOUTHERN BULLDOGS 1990 GIRLS SOCCER PREVIEW

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Head coach: Peter Chow (2nd season)

Assistant coach: Bill Schwarz.

1989 record: 3-7-2.

Returnees: Seniors Amy Gamble (F) and Marya Montgomery (F); juniors Vicky Prince (HB), Lindee Sisk (HB) and Kim Smith (FB); sophomore Nicole Gregory (G).

Newcomers: Freshmen Lisa Biederman (F) and Kari Sherbert (HB).

Coach's outlook: "With last year's team, everyone counted on Kelly (Archambo) to do it all. The entire offense was more centered toward Kelly. It wasn't evenly distributed. But this year, with Kelly gone, the offense should be more evenly distributed. Hopefully, it'll be spread out and the responsibility of the offense won't be put on one person. I think we're capable, if we play good ball, of being a .500 team, which could get us in the playoffs."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: The playoffs don't appear to be in Southern's immediate future, unless young players -- especially keeper Gregory -- adapt quickly and exceed Chow's expectations. Defense as a whole is shaky. Heavy burden is on Sisk, Gamble, Montgomery and Prince for offensive production. A .500 season is a long shot.
