If you'd like to do something for the American soldiers sweating it out in the Saudi Arabian desert, get out your baking pans and preheat your oven.
"Operation Cookie to the Mideast," which is based in Florida, is looking for Maryland bakers to make cookies for the soldiers, said Shannon Womack, a Crofton woman serving as the operation's publicist in this state.
She said plane loads of cookies are heading to Saudi Arabia every day through the efforts of a Florida woman named Sylvia Mease. Mrs. Mease and her husband, a retired Air Force officer, persuaded the Air Force to fly the cookies overseas.
People in Maryland who would like to participate in the operation should bake chewy cookies that can withstand intense heat, Mrs. Womack advised. Although chocolate chip cookies are an American favorite, they don't keep well in Saudi heat.
The cookies should not contain any alcohol because alcohol is illegal in Saudi Arabia, she added.
Cookies should be packaged in tin cans and shipped by United Parcel Service to: Operation Cookie c/o Sub Trek I, 190 Malabar Road #119, Palm Bay West Center, Palm Bay, Fla. 32907. Bakers are welcome to include notes.
