Police say Swiger was sitting on the back of a pickup truck when her boyfriend, John Edwin Meese, 23, also of the 9100 block of Town & Country Boulevard, accidentally discharged the weapon.

Swiger was struck in the right hand and right thigh, causing heavy bleeding, police said. She was transported to the hospital by state police helicopter.

Police say the incident is still under investigation, although a preliminary report lists the cause as accidental.
