Clemens improving rapidly

Boston Red Sox team team physician Arthur Pappas yesterday said pitcher Roger Clemens is no longer on codeine or any other pain relief, and the right-hander, who is being treated for inflammation in the right shoulder, told manager Joe Morgan that he might be able to start Friday in Chicago against the White Sox.

Morgan declined to offer a specific date for Clemens' return but said: "He's way, way better than any previous day. He thinks he could be ready to pitch Friday. I told him he's not going to go out there unless we're 1,000 percent sure, but he's really loosened up. It was almost like he couldn't believe it himself how good it was, but he's still got a ways to go."
