Viral video update: Felon, 40, charged in Howard school assault

Howard County police charged a Columbia man Monday with assaulting a student on the campus of Long Reach High School in Columbia on March 21.

Donnell Maurice Vannison, 40, of the 8500 block of Tamebird Court, faces second-degree assault and disorderly conduct charges. He was released Monday after a court appearance and is scheduled for trial on June 6.

Vannison, wearing a ski mask, entered the school property at about 2:20 p.m., police said. He approached a 16-year-old male student and struck him with a blow that grazed the boy's face. The student struck back, hit Vannison once and knocked him out. A 15-year-old female student, who witnessed the incident, then struck the boy. She was charged as a juvenile with assault last week.

Video of the 27-second fight went viral last week, after it was posted on, drawing widespread attention.

According to court records, Vannison has a long rap sheet, including convictions for first-degree escape in 2008; felony theft in 2007; drug possession in 2006; misdemeanor theft in 2002; and resisting arrest in 2001.

The victim was acting in self-defense and has not been charged, police said.
