Volunteer time and talent to ensure traditions continue [West Laurel]

It's been icy and it's been dicey! Since our schools have reopened after the holiday season, the weather has been a bit wild with snow, wind, rain and ice. Regular extracurricular activities are resuming now with sports, clubs and neighborhood events.

If you're a senior, you may want to check out the many classes that are being offered at the Laurel-Beltsville Senior Activity Center on Contee Road. There are classes to satisfy everyone, such as wood shop, painting or ceramics, Zumba, yoga and exercise, computer and Internet skills, digital photography, line dancing and billiard skills. A Winter Book Club meets every second and fourth Fridays from 2 to 3:30 p.m. This beautiful building welcomes all 60+ seniors from Prince George's and Montgomery counties and is open Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and is closed on Sunday. You can stop in and visit the coffee shop and have some pleasant conversation in the morning. Skim over the list of classes and sign up. Visit the gym. Best of all, you can visit with old friends and meet some new ones.

The West Laurel Recreation Council is looking for a few good men and women! We have been fortunate to have a great group of people who volunteer their time to bring us annual events, such as the Winter Holiday Party, Spring Egg Hunt, Family Swim Night and the Ice Cream Social. But unfortunately, these events are starting to get canceled because there are not enough people coming forward to help to organize them. A volunteer can determine how much time they have to give and what festivities they would like to participate in. Generations of West Laurel children have gathered eggs, participated in a tricycle and bicycle decoration contest, or made holiday crafts while sipping hot chocolate. Volunteers are wanted to help plan events or set up/ decorate and run the events or even clean up afterward. Teenagers can earn community service hours. If interested in helping to carry on these wonderful West Laurel traditions, please contact Rush Kester at 301-490-1310 or RWKester@aol.com.

Heads up! Mark your calendars now for the West Laurel Civic Association General Membership meeting, which will be held on Thursday, Feb. 19, at 7:30 p.m. at the West Laurel Community Building on Brooklyn Bridge Road. All are welcome and strongly encouraged to attend.
