What began 10 years ago as a small-scale fundraising race has grown to a Thanksgiving Day tradition: The Turkey Trot 5k, which benefits Laurel Advocacy and Referral Services.
This year's event, open to runners and walkers of all ages, begins Thursday, Nov. 27 at 8 a.m. in the parking lot of First United Methodist Church, 424 Main St. More than 800 participants are expected to run, walk or watch, according to LARS program coordinator Laura Wellford.
LARS is a nonprofit organization in Laurel that helps local residents who are homeless or have low-incomes.
The 5k race is certified by USA Track and Field. The race and the 1-mile fun walk, which follow a course through Old Town Laurel's historic district, will be held rain or shine.
The registration fee for either the run or walk is $40, which includes a long-sleeved commemorative race shirt and chip timing.

Participants can pre-register and pick up information packets Wednesday, Nov. 26 from 3 to 6 p.m. at First United Methodist Church.
