Gratitude theme of Montpelier's All Hung exhibition [South Laurel | Montpelier]

The Montpelier Arts Center features an All Hung Open Exhibition of artwork inspired by the theme "Gratitude," a perfect subject to consider during the holiday season. The exhibit will be in the Main Gallery from Nov. 7 until Dec. 27. A reception with the artists will be held on Sunday, Dec. 6 from 2 to 4 p.m. All artwork is available for sale, and has not been previously exhibited in the center. Also on exhibit from Nov. 7 to Dec. 27 is artist Caroline Thorington's "Menagerie," a compendium of lithographic prints featuring various depictions of animals. Animals in Thorington's work are sometimes fantastic creatures, sometimes mythological creatures and sometimes just themselves. The reception for this exhibit is Sunday, Nov. 8 from 2 to 4 p.m.

The Montpelier Arts Center is hosting the annual recital series of classical music over the next several months. On Sunday, Nov. 15 at 3 p.m. all are invited to hear vocalist Yulia Petrachuk. Born in Russia, Petrachuk has performed in numerous operas in Europe and the United States. Admission is free, but a $5 donation is recommended. This recital series is a juried competition open to classical musicians in the U.S. In March, cellist Alicia Ward and pianist Kimberly Kong perform, and in April chamber musicians Fortunata Trio is scheduled. These recitals are a perfect way to escape the drudgery of winter and celebrate the arrival of spring. Call 301-377-7800 for more information.

Deerfield Run Community Center is calling for donations of unwanted "gently worn" shoes. The requested donations include tennis shoes, casual and dress shoes, soccer shoes and any other type of shoes for men, women and children, which are in wearable condition. All shoes will be donated to the Shepherd's Cove Shelter in Capitol Heights. Bring your shoes to the center through the end of January.

The Laurel-Beltsville Senior Activity Center Book Club meets the second and fourth Fridays of the month from 2 to 3:30 p.m. The December book is "Olive Kitteridge," by Elizabeth Strout. January's selection is "Dreams From My Father," by President Obama. Come join the discussion for a lively exchange, sharing various perspectives on the book.

These include visits to Hillwood Estate museum and gardens, Homestead Gardens, and "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat" at the Kennedy Center.
