The new school year is almost upon us. The Prince George's County Public Schools system reminds all parents that full immunizations are required for all students at all grade levels. Deadline for immunizations is Aug. 23, the first day of the 2016-2017 school year. Montpelier Mansion has two nice events coming up in September. On Sunday, Sept. 4, beginning at 4 p.m., you can participate in the Hidden Spaces Tour. Come explore areas of the mansion not normally open to the public, including three cellars, a walk-in vault and other surprises. Learn about the construction of the building from Colonial times up to more modern additions. There is some climbing of narrow stairs and ladders involved, so be sure to wear practical clothes and shoes. If you are concerned about the level of activity, and your ability to fully participate, call 301-377-7817 and speak to a mansion staff member for more information. The fee for participation is $15; $10 for members of the Friends of Montpelier. Reservations are required, and spaces for this event fill up very quickly.

The mansion is also offering home schooled students the opportunity to learn how early residents prepared for the winter months. Winter on the Plantation, Sept. 13 from 1-4 p.m., offers participants ages 5 years and up the chance to practice the same chores related to getting the house and land ready for the upcoming cold months. Cost for participation is $6 for county residents and $7 for non-residents. Reservations and prepayment are required. Call the number above or email montpeliermansion@pgparks.com for information and reservations for both of these events at Montpelier.
