Spring into outdoor events at Patuxent Wildlife Visitor Center [South Laurel/Montpelier]

As spring weather (finally) graces our community, there is a bouquet of both outdoor and indoor activities for us to enjoy. The Patuxent Wildlife Visitor Center, 10901 Scarlet Tanager Loop, offers the Macro-Hike (Bilingual) on Saturday, June 2, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Participants explore the wetlands at Patuxent on this short hike to look for salamanders, frogs, fish andother creatures that call the wetlands home while learning some Spanish words. Bring boots, water, bug repellent, and appropriate clothes to get dirty. All ages are welcome, registration is required.

On Saturdays, from June 2 to Saturday, June 30, from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m., meet two of North America’s smallest birds of prey: the American kestreland and the eastern screech owl. Both expert hunters, the American kestrel uses its acrobatic prowess, while the eastern screech owl is a stealthy silenthunter. All ages, no registration is required.

On Wednesday, June 6, from 8 to 10 a.m., take a bird walk and search for spring migrants in various refuge habitats on this guided hike. This event is for those ages 16 and older. Binoculars are highly recommended. Walk begins at the visitor center.

For younger naturalists, there is the Tiny Tots program on Monday, June 18, from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Children ages 18 – 48 months, learn about wildlife at the refuge through fun and interactive songs, stories and activities. This age group can also have fun in the Learn to Fish activity on Monday, June 18, from 10:30 to11:15 a.m. Parent participation and registration are required for both of these activities. Their older siblings, ages 5 – 12, learn the proper techniques of fishing and the types of species found on the refuge while having fun. Equipment provided. Sunscreen, hat, and water bottle are recommended and registration is required. May is National Fitness Month. Montpelier Mansion celebrates physical activity in alignment with the visual and musical arts with Yoga and Jazz on Friday May 25, from 7 to 8 p.m. Participants focus on breathing, flexibility, concentration. The session is free for those 18 and over. Bring yoga mat and enjoy the calmer approach to fitness. Call 301-377-7800 for information.

On Friday, May 18, from 8 to 10 p.m., the Montpelier Arts Center celebrates the season with music performed by Cieli Minucci and Special EFX, recipient of three Emmy Awards and Grammy Awards nominee. Tickets for this special event are $25 (10 percent discount for members of Montpelier and seniors.) On Sunday, May 20, from 3 to 4:30 p.m., enjoy the classical recital of saxophonist Ava Oaxaca with accompanist Teodara Adzarova. The recital is free with requested $5 donation.
