On April 14, Pat Behenna, of Montpelier, hosted the local members of RESULTS (results.org a nonprofit, grassroots advocacy group that pushes for specific policies and legislation to address health, education and economic opportunity in the U.S. and around the world.During the gathering, participants heard from Manaan Mumma, program officer for nutrition programs for KANCO (kanko.org) Established in 1990, KANCO, the Kenyan AIDS NGOs Consortium, currently has over 1,200 member organizations and numerous individual members, bound together by a concern for a healthy Kenyan people and a sustainable health network in that country.The RESULTS members in attendance were impressed by Mumma's accomplishments and discussed how they might contribute to similar efforts.The current focus for the local RESULTS group meeting in Montpelier is legislation that will lead to dramatically lowering the number of deaths of children under age 5 (globally, an estimated 6.3 million now). Vansville Elementary School is hosting its third annual Family Fun Run on Saturday, May 30, at 9 a.m. at Granville Gude Park, 8300 Mulberry St.The runners will circle Laurel Lake on a beautiful spring morning.The event will raise funds to provide transportation for cultural and educational field trips for every grade within the school.There will be refreshments, raffle prizes and more.Each participant in the Family Fun Run will receive a Fun Run T-shirt, race bib and race bag.Early registration is $10 per person and $30 for a family of four.Registration fees on the day of the event will be higher.The cutoff date for early registrations is May 22. Montpelier Mansion is holding a Home School Day on Tuesday, May 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the mansion.Home school students ages 8 through 12 and their educators are invited to participate.The topic of this session is Weathering Racism – the Benjamin Banneker Almanacs.Participants will learn about Banneker and his almanacs and weather instruments.The afternoon will include science and math activities and study of related documents.Reservations are required.Fees are $6 per student for residents of Prince George's and Montgomery counties, and $7 for non-residents.
