Spring has sprung. Time to plan summer activities [South Laurel/Montpelier]

Spring break is coming to an end and this may be a good time to consider summer activity programs for school-agers. Deerfield Run Community Center will be hosting Explorers Camp for ages 6 to 12 year olds. There will be a variety of activities including sports, arts, crafts, swimming, field trips and special events. The camp is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Before and after care is also available. The camp runs in two week segments, starting July 18 and ending Aug. 24. Each segment costs $220 for residents and $286 for non residents. See ParksDirect web site or call 301-953-7882.

State Delegate Valentino-Smith has introduced legislation HB1302, Extreme Risk Prevention Orders, a "red flag" bill which provides a judicial path for families, law enforcement and other interested parties requesting a court order to remove a firearm from a person who is exhibiting signs of danger to themselves or to others. The legislation would provide the opportunity to appear before a judge and present evidence as to why a gun should be taken from an individual who appears to be suicidal or who has a clear history of violent behavior. The law would not interfere with a law abiding citizen's right to bear arms. HB1302 has successfully passed the Maryland House and is currently in the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee, where it is awaiting a vote.

In addition, the House and Senate have both passed budget bills which address additional funding for school safety measures including grants to improve physical security, as well as mental-health counselors and other measures to address security gaps. For more information on these initiatives contact Delegate Valentino-Smith at Geraldine.Valentino@house.state.md.us or call her office at 301-858-3101

Personal security and safety is always important. There have been some incidents lately of vehicles being damaged in our community. There was also a recent incident of individuals shooting pellet guns late at night in Bedford Park. Good neighbors watch out for each other and report safety concerns to District VI police. We all deserve a safe and peaceful time in our community as we welcome the sights and sounds of Spring (late though it may be).
