Warm weather brings outdoor concerts, nature activities [Montpelier/South Laurel]

Congratulations are in order for Dylan Haversack, who graduated with highest honors from Georgia Institute of Technology on May 6 with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. Dylan graduated from St. Vincent Pallotti High School in 2013. He is planning to continue his education in the fall at Georgetown University Law Center. Well done, Dylan!

Enjoy the summer weather and get to know more about our local wildlife at the Patuxent Research Refuge. There is no fee for these events, but many do require advanced registration. North Tract Programs at 230 Bald Eagle Drive include Riding Bicycles to Experience Patuxent Refuge's North Tract, on Saturday July 8 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Those ages 10 and older on this guided tour discover local wildlife, plants and historical sites, while learning the importance of reducing ecological footprints. Bring your own bike, energy bar/snack, water bottle and helmet. Ride is weather dependent.

Take a Bird Walk on Saturday July 22 from 8 to 10:30 a.m., or a Night Hike on Saturday July 22 from 8 to 10:30 p.m.

At the National Wildlife Visitor Center, 10901 Scarlet Tanager Loop, those ages 14 and older may take a guided tour to the Whooping Crane Center to observe a graceful and endangered adult whooping crane and find out more about the whooping crane population recovery program. The tour is Sunday July 9, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Arrive early, as tour will leave on time. Space is very limited.

The South Laurel Recreation Council announces its 39th annual summer concert series. This year's concert schedule is: Friday June 23 — Split2nd Band, pop music from the 60s and 70s; Friday, July 7 — Earth Wind and Fire Tribute Band, soul, jazz and blues from the 70s and 80s.

Shakespeare in the Park is scheduled for Friday, July 14 (rain location Deerfield Run Community Center.) All events are from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m.

All events are free. Bring a chair or blanket, a picnic basket and enjoy the entertainment in the rustic setting of the Montpelier Mansion front lawn. For more information, go to southlaurelrecreationcouncil.org

District 23A state Del. Geraldine Valentino-Smith briefed a group of community residents recently on activities of the General Assembly during the recent legislative session. Among the items she discussed was the funding for the Regional Medical Center in Largo, as well as for Champs House, which works with recovering alcoholic men, and a building to serve as a space for community and Scout meetings and warm nights homeless shelters at St. Nicholas Church on Contee Road. Valentino-Smith is available to meet with homeowner associations and other groups.
