The Prince George's County Police Department has identified the man injured in yesterday's non-fatal shooting in Laurel as 31-year-old Laurel resident David Bartholmew.Bartholmew was shot in the arm by an off-duty Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission police officer around 1 p.m. Aug. 7 in the 8000 block of Briarcroft Lane, police said, after he broke into the officer's home. Agency spokeswoman Ayoka Blandford said the man was taken to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries, where he continued to receive treatment Monday afternoon.During the investigation, the Police Department said the officer had heard a loud noise coming from downstairs, grabbed his duty weapon and found Bartholmew inside his home. After identifying himself as an officer, police said Bartholmew approached the homeowner with a knife and was then shot by the officer.Police said Bartholmew ran from the residence, but was arrested a short distance away. The knife was recovered at the home; no connection has been found between the homeowner and Bartholmew.The officer has served with the sanitary commission for one year, Blandford said, and worked for the University of Maryland-Baltimore for 20 years. The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission is a water and wastewater utility serving 1.8 million residents in Prince George's and Montgomery counties.Bartholmew has been charged with home invasion, attempted first degree assault, malicious destruction of property and a weapons charge, police said.To report any information on the incident, police ask residents to contact the Homicide Unit at 301-772-4925.
