Congratulations to Russett neighbors and friends, Carla and Colin Sandy, of Sandy Audio Visual LLC, who received the distinguished 2014 Top 100 Minority Business Enterprise Award Oct. 23 at the War Memorial Hall in downtown Baltimore. The awards ceremony took place during Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake's Minority Enterprise Development Week in Baltimore. The ceremony is designed to pay tribute to and acknowledge outstanding women and minority business owners in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware and the District of Columbia. Sandy Audio Visual LLC provides live webcasting, multi-angle camera production services and consulting to their clients, which include Fortune 500 companies, along with federal, state and municipal governments.
According to Carla Sandy, chief financial officer of the company, in order to qualify for the award, one must be nominated. Once nominated, the process continues by supplying answers to a questionnaire, which is then evaluated by the awards committee. One of their clients, Google Inc., provided a letter of recommendation. SAV LLC was started in April 2010 and has been a long-time passion of Colin Sandy, chief executive officer of the firm. His father was in the audio visual industry as is his brother, who owns his own audio visual business in Toronto, Canada.
Maintaining the audio visual business is just a part of the busy lives these two entrepreneurs share. Carla and Colin have excelled in other areas of business as well. Carla is a board-certified doctor in the field of obstetrics and gynecology who currently practices medicine in Maryland and the District of Columbia. She received her Bachelor of Science in biology with a minor in chemistry in 1995, graduating suma cum laude from Oakwood University in Huntsville, Ala. In 2001, she received her medical degree from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in Loma Linda, Calif.
Colin received his associate degree in public relations in 1995 and Bachelor of Arts in broadcast communications in 1996, graduating magna cum laude from Oakwood University. In 2000, he received his Juris Doctor from Howard University in Washington. He currently practices law in Washington and is a member of the District of Columbia, National, Federal Communications, and New York Bar Associations. Not only does the couple have busy professional lives, but they are both volunteers in Russett. Colin currently serves as president on the Russett Community Association Board of Directors and Carla is a Neighborhood 11A Committee representative.
Along with that, the Sandys are first-time parents to Russett's new resident, their 4-month-old son, Calvin.
Just a friendly reminder, Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday, Nov. 2.
