Find 'treasures' at annual yard sale [Russett]

On Saturday, May 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Russett's annual Yard Sale will be in full swing in the Russett Community Center, Kindercare and Russett Community Bathhouse parking lots. You know the old saying, "One man's junk is another man's treasure"; well stop on by and peruse the different vendor tables for that one-of-a-kind treasure. The treasure hunt awaits! This event is open to the public.

Another event coming up is the Anne Arundel County Shred-A-Rama, which is sponsored by the Anne Arundel County Police-Community Relations Council with assistance from the Anne Arundel County Police Department. This event for Anne Arundel County residents will be held on Saturday, May 2 from 9 a.m. to noon at the following four locations: Anne Arundel High School, 1001 Annapolis Road in Gambrills, parking lot F, Northern District; Brooklyn Park Middle School, 200 Hammonds Lane in Baltimore, Eastern District; Anne Arundel County Police headquarters, 8495 Veterans Highway in Millersville, in the back parking lot; and South River High School, 200 Central Ave. East in Edgewater, Southern District. Anne Arundel County residents may bring up to four hand-held boxes of personal documents for shredding. Items that won't be shredded include X-rays, CDs and film. As mentioned in previous columns, my good friend and Russett resident Bill Berned will be participating in the American Diabetes Association's fourth annual Chesapeake Bay Tour De Cure on Saturday, May 16. Bill will be riding with many other riders from all over the United States in the fight to help stop diabetes as well as to raise money for research, education and diabetes advocacy. This year's route will go through Talbot County, downtown Easton, Oxford and Trappe. The route itself will be 100 miles. Bill's new goal is $3,500 and so far he has raised $3,145. Anyone interested in helping Bill reach or exceed his new goal, please go to diabetes.org, http://www.diabetes.org click on "Ride" at top of page, then find his personal page, click "donate" and follow the prompts.

The Color Me Green contest winners were announced April 22 at an awards ceremony, which was held at Tawes Garden in Annapolis. As mentioned in my February column, the annual contest, sponsored by the Maryland departments of Natural Resources and the Environment, encourages all young poets, artists, producers and photographers in kindergarten through grade 12 to submit their original creation inspired by Maryland's outdoors. Out of 200 submissions, the top 12 were chosen. The grand prize winner was Rachel Park, of Rockville, with her painting entitled, "A Hiker's Reward," which will be on the welcome site of the new online Maryland Bay Game. The other 2015 contest winners include Alexander Hobson, from Columbia, grades K-2; Sterling Goodwin, from Pasadena, grades 7-9; Drew French, from Towson, grades 3-6; and Libby Darrell, from Baltimore, grades 10-12 in the poetry category. The drawing/painting category winners Include: grade K-2, Tyler Wu, of Ellicott City; grades 3-6, Andy Wang, of Potomac; and the grand prize winner, Grades 7-9, Rachel Park, of Rockville. The photography category winners include Connor Wu, of Ellicott City, grades K-2; Jasmine Brion, of Lutherville-Timonium, grades 3-6; Delaney Rowe, of Arnold, grades 7-9; and Hailee Smith, of Baltimore, grades 10-12. All winners will get a 2015 Maryland State Park Passport for the whole year and, along with the finalists, receive white oak seedlings. Their entries will be featured in the new electronic "Bay Game," which will be unveiled this summer.
