Happy Easter!

"Here comes Peter Cottontail Hoppin' down the bunny trail," lyrics to a very familiar song we all grew up with and sang as children, was a perfect opening for the Russett Community Association's annual Bunny Egg-Stravaganza event, which was held March 21 at the Russett Community Center. The bunny came hopping into the community center, which was decorated with pastel-colored streamers, spring flowers and more. Upon entering the community center, children had the opportunity to play the "Jelly Bean Guessing Game" and win a stuffed 2015 Easter Bunny and a stuffed duck. The total number was 273 and there were three winners: Khloe Battle who guessed 250; Ayeesha David who guessed 250; and Lenny Mierzwa who guessed 253. Children and parents alike were smiling and cheering while waiting for that "Kodak moment" with the bunny.

Arts and crafts consisted of decorating Easter-themed bags and lollipops were handed out by the bunny as he walked around and interacted with everyone. While awaiting for the egg hunt, children and parents alike spent some of their time outside at the petting zoo, which had a variety of animals including bunnies, baby chicks, a mini pony, baby goats and a mini donkey.

In attendance were new and familiar faces such as longtime Russett resident Linda Houck who was there with her grandchildren Kadence, Khloe, Camden and Caison; as well as Maria Don Bullian who has lived in Russett for two years with Olivia and Camilla Yandell. Other families having a good time were seven-year Russett residents Bryson and Bridgette Hyatt along with three-year residents Crystal Smith and Lakeisha Hall.

The egg hunt commenced with more than 660 colored eggs, which were filled with candy and dispersed throughout the front parking areas of KinderCare for children to find. As a parting gift and memento for all the children, each child received a small Easter basket filled with animal crackers, lollipops and toys. Everyone left smiling and laughing as the sun made a brief appearance, radiating throughout the sky.

A big Russett thank you to PMP staff and all the participants as well as volunteers Elijah Hernandez; Damita Green; Activities Committee members Cathy Mason, Deborah Jones, Nicole Briscoe, Joan Briscoe and Derrika Francis; and Mary's Go Round for providing all the animals for the petting zoo.

And as a final note, here is an update on my good friend and Russett resident Bill Berned who will be riding in the American Diabetes Association's fourth annual Chesapeake Bay Tour De Cure on Saturday, May 16. He has exceeded his goal of $2,000 and has set a new one of $2,500, and is almost there with $2,410. Let's help Bill achieve and/or exceed his new goal by going to diabetes.org, clicking on "Ride" and then Bill's personal page, click "donate" and follow the prompts.

Happy birthday to Jenny Rum who celebrates on April 9, and Olivia Yandell who celebrated on March 30.
