As the new year begins, volunteering your time and skills can make a vital difference. Whether in your community, animal shelters, committees, schools or church, working for the greater good will not only benefit you spiritually but it will help those in need and not be forgotten.
An exciting event coming up on Monday, Jan. 18 is Day On Not A Day Off, a day of service to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The Anne Arundel County Volunteer Center along with Church On The Rock and their partners invite all citizens of Anne Arundel County to help celebrate this holiday by coming together and volunteering their time for several nonprofit organizations at one central location. This event will be comprised of two shifts starting at 10 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan.18 at Church On The Rock, 649 Old Mill Road in Millersville.
Some activities include designing Valentine's Day cards for our troops serving overseas and their families here at home, making cards for shut-ins and seniors, participating in various activities teaching good communication skills and conflict resolution, helping individuals with developmental disabilities in a project and more. Dr. Martin Luther King (MLK) Day of Service is open to citizens of all ages. Children age 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult (one adult for every group of five youth). Please bring a nonperishable food item for the Anne Arundel Food and Resource Bank, and along with that, washable coats gently used or new will also be collected for children sizes infant to high school to be distributed to children in need through HOPE For All.
On Tuesday, Jan.12 at 8 p.m., the Anne Arundel County Democratic Central Committee will host a party/fundraiser to watch and hear President Obama's State of the Union address at the Waugh Chapel Village Commons Community Center, 1326 Main Chapel Way. They will provide food, drinks and a big screen TV. Donation is $20. You can donate in advance at annearundeldems.com, RSVP to email@example.com or pay at the door.
Happy birthday to my friends Lisa Castaneda, who celebrates on Jan. 10; Bob Louthian, who celebrates on Jan. 12; and Jason Waskey, who celebrates on Jan. 19.
