Laurel police today identified the pedestrian who was hit and killed by a car early Monday morning while crossing Fort Meade Road.
Police said Eloy Estrada Velasquez, 45, of no fixed address, was struck by a car traveling eastbound in the 9600 block of Fort Meade Road around 5:40 a.m.
The driver of the car remained on the scene and was not charged in the accident, city spokeswoman Audrey Barnes said.
In a video interview posted by the city of Laurel, Sgt. Randy Snearly said the crash left eastbound Route 198 closed for nearly five hours.
"A subject attempted to cross the road in or near the crosswalk by running across it," Snearly said in the video. "There was a heavy fog condition [and] it was dark out, not lit by streetlights. He was struck by a vehicle, causing a fatality."
