Another busy pool season starts this weekend [Maryland City]

Memorial Day quickly appears this weekend. All of the snow and ice of the winter has now become a distant memory and "fun in the sun" soon empties the cold and dreary memories.

Congratulations to all of this year's graduates. Two hold a special place in my heart as my son, David, graduated from the University of Alabama earlier this month and my daughter, Kellianne, graduated from Archbishop Spalding High School last week. All of the excitement, arrangements and festivities definitely kept us busy this month.  Congratulations to all parents celebrating their children's landmark achievements as well.

School will be over in a couple more weeks and students will be looking for some summer adventures. One of the best hidden adventures in our area is the West Arundel Swim Club. WASC opens its gates on Saturday, May 24 at noon to begin its 50th season of operation.

It is the first place many of our neighbors think about when we mention summer. Located at 259 Old Line Ave., WASC is a private swim club nestled in the development of Maryland City. Members join from all around Laurel and the surrounding area, coming from Maryland City, Russett, Laurel Highlands, Brock Bridge Estates, Jessup, Hanover, Howard County and Prince George's County.

The family-focused pool continues membership sales and renewals for its summer season this weekend. Membership costs for an entire family for the summer usually run around $450, and new family-type memberships receive a free session of swim lessons for each child in the family. What a bargain!

The pool offers a variety of activities throughout the summer including volleyball, basketball and kickball; a playground and picnic area and grills; as well as a slide and diving boards.  Kids ages 18 and under can join the swim team and build many new friends. The pool also offers special activity nights for kids, teens and adults. So, stop by this weekend and check it out.

he pool season ends on Labor Day. The pool is open daily from noon to 9 p.m. so even the working family gets plenty of time to enjoy the fun.  Grab a T-shirt and some shorts, put the swimsuits and sunscreen on the kids, and head down to the pool for the summer.

For more information on memberships, contact the membership chairperson, Flo Venit, at 301-725-5644 or send my husband, John, an email at

The first activities of the season for the pool begin this weekend. Members and their guests can join the fun on Sunday, May 25, at the first cookout pot luck of the season beginning at 6:30 p.m.  Bring a side dish/salad/dessert to share and enjoy hamburgers and hot dogs provided by WASC for a minimal price.
