King's 'I have a dream' message echoed by leaders for centuries [Letter]

America has thrived from centuries of freedom. A freedom that can be largely attributed to an event 50 years ago where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous "I have a Dream" speech for the sake of equality among all Americans. Today, after half a century, we celebrate MLK's struggle for equality, peace and freedom all across America — a dream for which MLK sacrificed his life, to make into a reality for us.

As a proud Muslim American I can't help but relate this speech to another speech made over 1,500 years ago. The Prophet Muhammad, in similar address stated, "All mankind is from Adam and Eve ... a white has no superiority over a black nor does a black have any superiority over a white except in piety and good action." I call on my fellow citizens to continue to project this message that has been echoed by great leaders from century to century.
