Mayor, council support initiatives for students [Letter]

I have been fortunate to be able to work with such an open-minded, dedicated, knowledgeable and innovative group of men and women who comprise the Laurel City Council. As the former PTA President and Treasurer at Laurel Elementary School, I can honestly say that this group of individuals has our children's very best interests at heart. From their support of the improvements to our parks and playgrounds, bike paths, recreational activities, safety and educational pursuits, I believe that council members Crary, Leszcz, Nicholas, Ricks and Smalls have proven time and again that their priority is to strive to make Laurel the best place to live, play, work and go to school.

Without critical support from Mayor Moe and the council, LES would not have been able to receive the grants through KaBOOM! and Stoneyfield Farms to replace its playgrounds, both the playgrounds that you see outside of the school as well as the $15,000 grant through KaBOOM! and Dr. Pepper/Snapple for the "Playground in a Box" that was awarded to the school for indoor or outdoor play. Through the leadership of the mayor and council, the Department of Parks and Recreation has been able to carry out the vision of what constitutes a Playful City USA, a national award received by the city each year for the last six years from the national non-profit Kaboom!

It is not just our kids that are busy with activities in Laurel, but our senior citizens are busy, too. With the mayor and council's continued support, the Parks and Recreation Department can offer a wide variety of programs for senior citizens as well as children. In addition, they have proven their commitment to the safety of the residents of Laurel, with the repair or replacement of sidewalks, curbs and crosswalks

In partnership with Team Laurel, I know that the lives of all of Laurel's citizens will be the best it can be.
