History and high schools are a productive team [Letter]

Two years ago the Laurel Historical Society was given a wonderful opportunity. We responded to an email requesting help with some old scrapbooks that were found in Laurel High School depicting life in the High School in years past. The books are like opening a time capsule into the lives of Laurel's students in decades past.

In response to the need to preserve the scrapbooks, the Spartan Historical Society was born. The group meets weekly and is led by two dedicated teachers, Ms. Holmes and Mr. Brennan. Kevin Leonard (author of History Matters) and I join them every week to help them with a variety of projects — scanning the scrapbooks, creating History Day projects and practicing public speaking to name a few.

The past two years have opened my eyes to an often overlooked portion of Laurel — Laurel High School. The students we work with are amazing. They are thoughtful, inquisitive and hard working.

Working with these students is the highlight of my week. They remind me why I got into the field of history — to use what we know about the past to help make the world a better place today. And for that reminder I am grateful.
