Laurel baseball coach Don Cleveland has seen victory slip away before this season, so dissecting Wednesday's 5-4 loss to visiting Wise didn't take much effort.
"In the top of the fifth inning, we gave them four (unearned) runs," said Cleveland, whose team beat Wise, 11-4, earlier in the seasons. "We just made the errors at the wrong time."
Laurel (9-6) led 3-1 heading into the top of the fifth, but Wise took the lead for good by pushing across four runs with the help of three errors in that inning.
Myles Woolfolk walked to lead off and stole second. The next batter, Ryan Fortune, reached on an error, which allowed Woolfolk to score.
Laurel pitcher Nash Persaud, who took the loss and gave up seven hits and one earned run in seven innings, walked Thomas Mason to put runners at first and second.
Nico Brooks lined a ball to center field that was misjudged to bring home Mason and Fortune for a 4-3 Wise lead. Brooks went to third on the play and scored on Laurel's third error.
Laurel answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth.
Leadoff batter Michael Young reached on an error, stole second and scored on Tyler Carmen's single to center field.
Persaud did his part to keep it a one-run game. He finished strong and pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh.
Laurel put a couple of runners on in the sixth. Leadoff batter Tiamieu reached on an infield hit and Ashtin Brown followed with a grounder to shortstop Marco Griffin, who stepped on second and threw on to first for a double play.
Wise starting pitcher TJ Young then allowed a single to Jarrett Livas and hit Young with a pitch before getting Michael Bynoe to ground out.
In the bottom of the seventh, TJ Young got leadoff batter Jarrett Leishear to ground out to first before being replaced by Wise closer Anthony Turner, a left-hander.
Turner came onto to face Carmen, Laurel's best hitter. Turner retired Carmen and Jordan Abbott to end the game.
"I got six quality innings from TJ," Wise coach Andrew Gilliam of Young, who yielded one earned run on four hits and struck out five while walking three. "But I wanted to see what Anthony could do in that situation."
