The forecast for snow Tuesday morning was accurate as a dusting of several inches of cold, icy snow covered sidewalks and streets in Laurel by sunrise, making for a slippery commute and closing schools in Howard and Prince George's counties.

Some areas could see up to three inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service, and snow could continue to fall until about 1 p.m.

A snow emergency was declared in Prince George's, Howard and Anne Arundel counties earlier Tuesday. During a snow emergency, parking is restricted along streets designated snow emergency routes, and cars are required to be equipped with all-weather or snow tires.

When a snow emergency is called in Prince George's County, Laurel city officials follow suit and establish a snow emergency for Laurel. Certain city streets are designated snow emergency routes and when the city is under a snow emergency, parking is not allowed on the even-numbered side of those streets.

Cars parked on those sides of the street could be towed and their owners ticketed. To find a car that has been towed from a snow emergency route, call the Laurel police at 301-498-0092 for release information.
