Overnight lane closings on I-95 near Laurel begin this weekend

As work continues on the $35.5 million Intercounty Connector interchange construction project at Interstate 95 in Laurel, northbound lanes of I-95 south of Route 198 will be closed for overnight work to remove the old Van Dusen Road bridge over I-95.

According to the State Highway Administration, the bridge demolition, which will be accomplished in two phases, should be finished by late summer, depending on weather conditions.

Beginning July 13, the two right lanes on northbound I-95 will be closed overnight, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., Saturday through Thursday, for about three weeks. After the bridge demolition is completed above those lanes, the two left lanes on northbound I-95 will be closed overnight during demolition.

In order to remove the steel bridge beams, SHA officials warn that all traffic on northbound I-95 will be stopped intermittently for no more than two 15- to 30-minute periods between midnight and 4 a.m.

After the bridge demolition over northbound lanes is complete, the same routine will be followed for about three weeks for the southbound lanes of I-95, south of Route 198, with the two left lanes closing overnight, then the right lanes, and with all lanes closed for intermittent periods.

SHA advised drivers to consider using alternates routes, such as Route 1, Route 29 and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.
