A suspicious device later found to be a fake bomb caused an evacuation at the Brook Mill condominiums last week.

According to Prince George's County Assistant Fire Chief Paul Gomez, the Laurel Police Department received a 911 call Dec. 10 from a resident who found the device. Laurel police officers investigating the device asked the Prince George's County bomb squad for assistance.

The bomb squad did not find any explosive device, city spokeswoman Audrey Barnes said.

"They did find a fake device which they believed someone intended to look like a bomb," she said.

Barnes described the device as having wires coming out of a canister into a second bottle, which contained an unknown liquid.

She said the tenant and owner of the condo where the device was found were both being questioned; no charges had been filed as of Tuesday.

Barnes said Laurel Mayor Craig Moe, Laurel City Council President Ed Ricks and city building inspector John Chenault arrived at the condo complex as residents were being evacuated.

Emergency Services Director Marty Flemion set up the Mobile Command Unit at the nearby Scotchtown Hills Elementary School.
